Volunteer Opportunities at St Thadeus Pre- and Primary School

As a volunteer in our school, you will be doing different activities such as teaching, sports, playground monitoring, field trips, ICT activities including computer lab work, website development and optimization, taking care of small maintenance and construction around the school, and helping in fundraising activities as the school is still under construction. This school is underfunded and consequently under-staffed. This is where you come in!

Whether you are a qualified teacher or a student, you could help make a big impact on the lives of underprivileged children as a volunteer teaching at our school.

What Will You Be Doing?

Our school is vibrant, with most pupils extremely willing to learn. While working at our school, you may be asked to take lessons in English, Math, or Science, but don't worry if your strengths lie outside these areas – the children you teach will benefit from your enthusiasm and ability to construct sentences in English. Games and sports are another important part of school life, so please be prepared to get involved with these as well.

You will spend some days working alongside a local teacher or an established teaching volunteer, but we also encourage our volunteers to bring their own ideas and get stuck in! You can make improvements in the classroom using your own initiatives. This will help develop your skills as a teacher while providing help to those most in need.

Typical Week

Volunteers at our school are generally expected to work five days a week. A typical weekday looks like this:

• Morning: Start the day with breakfast alongside students and other volunteers at the school dining hall, with school beginning around 8:00 AM.
• Lunch: Break for lunch at around 1:00 PM with other volunteers, students, and local staff.
• Afternoon: Additional classes or work in the afternoon, with time for games and sports.
• End of Day: Finish teaching at around 3:00 PM, but often the children will want you to stay and play.
• Evening: After your placement, unwind with other volunteers, boarding students, and local team members over dinner. Evenings are often filled with games and activities.

Weekends are yours to explore, but there are always extra adventures to do in Tanzania!

Living at St Thadeus Pre & Primary School
